Volkswagen is reimagining its legendary Type 2 Microbus—perhaps best known to Americans simply as the VW Bus—with an all-electric powertrain. Drivers in the United States have embraced EVs and perhaps much faster and with more gusto than anyone expected. While the automotive industry has done an admirable job kicking EV design and production into high gear, there remains underserved areas. Among them, according to Volkswagen, are roomy options for families, and it believes that the 2024 Volkswagen ID.Buzz Microbus can help to fill that niche in an exciting and interesting way.
Interior
There is little doubt that the Microbus announcement is generating a lot of excitement, and the team at Ancira Volkswagen of San Antonio has received many questions about the interior. It’s understandable as it was the cabin that set the original Microbus apart from the competition. In North America, the new Microbus will be sold exclusively with three rows and provide seating for seven in a 2:3:2 arrangement. Headroom and legroom figures had not been provided as of this writing, but Volkswagen is on record saying that even large adults would be able to stretch out in the third row. The front seats will even have integrated tables at the back that fold out into the second row. In addition, your Microbus will have 40 cubic feet of dedicated cargo space in the cabin, and there is also a front trunk—or frunk—that provides even more space.
Exterior
The German automaker is designing the 2024 Volkswagen ID.Buzz with multiple wheelbases. However, only the longest wheelbase will be available in the U.S. to start. As much spaciousness possible is what the brand sees as the biggest selling point for the Microbus in North America, but it will likely reconsider if it has a hit on its hands. The wheelbase measures 117.6 inches, and the overall length is 185.5 inches, which is just about 15.5 feet. All models will have four independent doors in addition to a rear liftgate that provides you convenient access to the dedicated cargo area.
Mechanical / Powertrain
The 2024 Volkswagen ID.Buzz has an all-electric powertrain. We currently lack many specifics but do know that the battery pack will be larger than the 77-kWh pack used for the European edition. Estimated range is still to be determined, but it should be at least 260 miles on a single charge. The Microbus will support Level I, Level II and Level III. Volkswagen has stated that with a Level III connection, available via a DC fast-charging station, you can charge from 5% to 80% in 30 minutes. The Microbus in the U.S. will be all-wheel drive and have a dual-motor setup. Performance numbers are not yet available, but we do know that it will exceed 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque.
Safety
Every Microbus will have a state-of-the-art infotainment system with all of the bells and whistles modern drivers expect, such as Apple and Android integration and a rearview camera. A 10-inch center touch screen is standard, and a 12-inch center touch screen is optional. The base package will include a suite of driver-assistance technologies. The full scope of the suite has not been revealed, but we do know that frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning with lane keeping assist will be included. There will also be some options, such as smart cruise control.
