Is a Volkswagen Jetta GLI considered a sports car?
Ancira Volkswagen of San Antonio – Is a Volkswagen Jetta GLI considered a sports car?
Volkswagen reintroduced the Jetta GLI for the seventh Jetta generation, which began with the 2019 model year, and it has been a top seller at Ancira Volkswagen of San Antonio ever since. The sportier R-Line editions of the Jetta have always done quite well, and our customers took to this version that has a similar style but even more oomph. One of the most common questions we get about the GLI is, if the Volkswagen Jetta GLI is considered a sports car, and the answer to that is an emphatic yes!
Jetta GLI: A Sports Sedan
The Volkswagen Jetta GLI sports car available at Ancira Volkswagen of San Antonio is more specifically a compact sports sedan. A sedan is a four-door vehicle with what is called a three-box configuration. The boxes refer to the compartments for the engine, passengers, and cargo. The cargo area is traditionally a trunk. This particular sedan is compact because of the wheelbase and length, which are 105.6 and 186.9 inches, respectively. That’s about 15.6 feet overall. The difference between a sports sedan and a standard sedan is that decisions are made to make the driving experience more fun and exhilarating. In other words, Volkswagen provides you more than you’d need say for a commuter.
Jetta GLI Performance
The Volkswagen Jetta GLI sports car differs from the standard Jetta when it comes to the powertrain. The standard model has a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder—158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque—and is available with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.
The Jetta GLI is a front-wheel-drive vehicle like the standard model but is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 228 hp and 258 lb.-ft. It does give you the option of the manual transmission, but if you prefer an automatic, you get a dual-clutch eight-speed with a direct-shift gearbox. Other performance upgrades include a four-wheel independent sports suspension with adaptive dampers, variable-ratio steering, and a sport exhaust.
One of the Most Affordable Sports Cars
Pricing is one of the reasons the Jetta GLI has been such a success. There is no other vehicle at this price point that provides this level of performance and sophistication. You might expect that to come at the cost of amenities and technologies, but that’s not the case. You get all of the refinement VW is known for in the base package, including leather seating and a panoramic sunroof. VW has done away with the different trim levels for the newest model year and now includes everything in the base package.
What About Insurance?
The good news is that the Jetta GLI isn’t a sports car for insurance purposes, which means premiums will be similar to those for a standard Jetta. There are a few reasons for this. One is that the horsepower doesn’t reach the standard for insurance purposes. Other reasons have to do with the vehicle’s size and the fact that it seats five rather than two.
