2023 Volkswagen Jetta Overview
The Jetta continues to be one of the top options among compact sedans. It is not only affordable but delivers a superior value proposition and is among best in class when it comes to fuel performance. With the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta now available at Ancira Volkswagen of San Antonio, Volkswagen makes the model even more compelling with additions to both the standard equipment and the options. A top competitor to the Jetta is the 2023 Hyundai Sonata, which is now available at area Hyundai dealerships. It arrives with updates to its standard features as well, so with that in mind, let’s compare the 2023 Hyundai Sonata vs. 2023 Volkswagen Jetta and see how these two vehicles stack.

Both the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta and 2023 Hyundai Sonata are small four-door sedans, but the Jetta is a bit more compact, which we think works in its favor in this segment. It has a 105.7-inch wheelbase and a 5.5-inch ground clearance and measures 186.5 inches in length or about 15.5 feet. The Sonata, on the other hand, has a 111.8-inch wheelbase and a 5.3-inch ground clearance and measures 192.2 inches in length or just a hair more than 16 feet. The Jetta is available in four core trim levels—S, Sport, SE and SEL—and has a significantly lower starting MSRP, which we think is important to the discussion. Hyundai offers the Sonata in five trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited and N Line. In both cases, 16-inch alloy wheels are standards and 17-inch wheels are available. Hyundai also offers 18- and 19-inch wheels.

The larger size of the 2023 Hyundai Sonata does allow for more passenger and cargo volume, and much of that is used for front legroom. That may make it the better option for the tall driver who wants a small sedan, but the more than 41 inches provided by the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta is more than enough for most people shopping this segment. The Sonata provides more trunk space as well, but the Jetta is still quite spacious at more than 14 cubic feet. Perhaps the most surprising difference when comparing the 2023 Hyundai Sonata vs. 2023 Volkswagen Jetta is that the Jetta has about 2.5 inches more of rear legroom, and that makes it a much more appealing option if you intend to have adult passengers.

Both of these vehicles are front-wheel drive, and as is common for the segment, no all-wheel drive option is offered. Hyundai and Volkswagen both opt for an eight-speed automatic transmission, but a notable difference with the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta is you have the option of a six-speed manual transmission with the S and Sport trims. Volkswagen and Hyundai both went with a four-cylinder. However, Volkswagen chose a smaller and turbocharged engine. Hyundai went with a larger and non-turbo engine. It provides more power on paper. The real-word difference is minimal, and the fuel economy of the 2023 Hyundai Sonata is significantly less than the Jetta.

Volkswagen includes blind-spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking as standard equipment. The IQ.Drive suite is offered as an option and included with the SE and SEL. This choice is what allows the Jetta to be so affordable. If you don’t want those features, you don’t have to pay for them, and if you do want the features, the price will still be less than an equivalent Hyundai model.
